Anyone who has ever attempted a DIY project knows that a tape measure is an essential tool. However, reading a tape measure can be tricky, especially for beginners. If you’ve ever tried to measure something and got lost in the numbers, don’t worry – with a little practice, you’ll be able to quickly and easily read a tape measure like a pro.
To effectively read a tape measure, it is important to first familiarize yourself with the various markings and units of measurement that can be found on your tape measure. In between the inch markings, you will often find quarter-inch (1/4″) marks, half-inch (1/2″) marks, one-eighth inch (1/8″) marks, and one-sixteenth inch (1/16″) marks. Familiarize yourself with these markings, as they will be key in reading a tape measure accurately.
It is important to understand how the numbers on the tape are arranged. Most tape measures will have 16 inch studs as a reference point, which makes it easy to visualize dimensions and distances. Oftentimes, there will also be a black diamond at the 19.2-inch mark, which represents the 20-inch framing member.
Once you’ve become familiar with the markings on your tape measure, it’s time to begin reading the measurements.
- To start, extend the tape measure out in front of you, with the numbers facing up. Note the 0 inch marking on the tape – this is important, as it will serve as your starting point when reading measurements.
- Next, locate the measurement you want to take. For example, if you’re measuring the length of a board, find the end of the board and line up the tape measure so that it rests on the edge of the board.
- Now, simply read off the measurement at the point where the other end of the tape measure meets the board. For example, if the tape measure stops at the 7-inch mark, then the board is 7 inches long.
In addition to whole numbers, you will also need to be able to read fractions when reading a tape measure. A tape measure is made up of a series of markings in standard units of measurement, such as 1/4, 1/8, and 1/16 inches. In order to read a fraction, you will need to find the correct marking on the tape measure and count the number of spaces between that mark and the starting point. For example, if you’re measuring a piece of wood and the tape measure stops at the 1-1/4 mark, that means there is one whole inch plus one quarter inch between the starting point and the end of the board.
You can also use a tape measure to take internal measurements, such as the width of a doorway. To do this, simply hook the tape measure onto one side of the opening, making sure the 0-inch mark is at the very edge. Then, extend the tape measure across the opening until it reaches the other side. Again, make sure the 0-inch mark is lined up with the edge of the opening, then read off the measurement.
It’s really that simple!
With a little practice, you’ll be reading a tape measure like a pro in no time! Just remember to familiarize yourself with the markings on your tape measure and to always start from the 0-inch mark when taking measurements. Good luck!
